Jan Lünemann, Professor of Neurology at the University Hospital Münster, visited colleagues and collaborators at the DKFZ in Heidelberg on the 24th of May 2024.

As a member of the BEHIND-MS consortium, he wanted not only to update his consortium partners and other interested members of the scientific public on his recent work on the role of EBV infection for MS, but also take this opportunity for scientific exchange and strengthening the collaboration links between BEHIND-MS partners.

For his talk, he took his listeners on a journey through his career spanning 20 years of exploring the impact of EBV infection on multiple sclerosis (MS). To this end, he not only discussed his own recent work on this topic, but also presented an overview of pivotal studies in this field, strengthening the connection between MS and EBV infection especially in recent years.

After his presentation, he was pleased to engage in lively discussions with the attendees and ended with some words on the potential impact of this research on patients: “While the evidence for a role of EBV in the development of MS has been growing for years, recent studies indicate a direct link between the two which has the potential to fundamentally change our understanding of this disease. We are optimistic that a better concept on how EBV potentially interferes with MS pathology will result in direct benefit to patients. Being a part of the BEHIND-MS consortium puts us at the heart of this exciting research area as part of a multi-disciplinary team.”
